How to Choose the Right Gold Chain Length

Before you commit to buying a new gold chain, you want to make sure you are aware of the fit of the chain before committing to your new solid gold jewelry investment. The length of the chain will determine your entire experience with it.

For example, an 18-inch–20-inch chain will be comfortable for gym guys that tend to jump around and train in inverted positions. This size range won’t get in your face too often and tends to sit a little higher on the neck. If you’re someone who doesn’t want your chain moving around too much throughout the day, this can be a really good place to start.

The best-selling range is the 20-inch–22-inch combo, which makes for a really nice stack. This is probably the most versatile range because it gives you enough room to wear a chain on its own while also giving you the option to layer another chain with it.

20-inch rope chain is a great example of an everyday chain. It has enough presence to stand on its own, but you can also pair it with another chain or a pendant without making the whole thing feel too heavy. If you’re building your collection from scratch, this is one of those lengths that is easy to come back to.

But by far the best-selling length for the men's chain category is the 22-inch.

The 22-inch offers the perfect balance of comfort and style and is the most popular size for a reason. It sits lower on the chest without feeling overly long, which makes it easy to wear with a T-shirt, hoodie, button-up, or almost anything else.

A simple hack: pairing a pendant with your 20-inch chain can give you the illusion of a 22-inch, which ends up being a nice combo as well. The pendant naturally brings the visual weight lower on your chest, so you can get a similar effect without actually sizing up the chain.

This is also where the style of chain starts to matter. A Franco chain has a naturally structured and substantial look, while a Rope chain has more movement and texture. Two chains can technically be the exact same length but sit and feel completely different depending on their construction.

Moving onto the 24-inch chain, these have a more relaxed feel to them. I like to think of it as the baggy pants of chains. Something a bit more comfortable, flowy, and lived in. It hangs lower on the chest and has a more noticeable presence, especially when worn by itself.

The 24-inch can also be a good option if you already have a shorter chain and want to add something that creates more separation when layering. Instead of both chains sitting on top of each other, the difference in length gives each piece its own space.

Moving onto the 26-inch chain, this is where it gets interesting because this size fits on and off your head without needing to interfere with the clasp. This can make a difference if you don’t want to constantly unclasp your chain every time you take it off.

Body types also play a role in how your chains fit. A 26-inch chain on a broader chest and larger build can end up sitting how a 24-inch chain would sit on someone built more narrow. This is why there really isn’t one universal “correct” chain length.

Your height, neck size, chest, and overall build can all change how a chain looks. Even the thickness of the chain matters. A 3mm chain and a 6mm chain at the exact same length are going to have a completely different visual presence.

In the industry, sizes go up in increments of 2 inches most commonly, starting at 16 inches and ending at around 30 inches. Our remaining sizes to consider are the 28 and 30 inch.

On average, these sizes are very niche. Oftentimes, gold connoisseurs and collectors are drawn toward these sizes because they like a bold, unconventional piece that can be worn and styled in an elevated fashion. These longer chains can also be a really interesting way to build onto a collection once you already have your everyday lengths covered.

At the end of the day, choosing your chain length comes down to how you want the chain to feel on you, not just what looks good on someone else. If you’re buying your first chain, the 20-inch or 22-inch range is usually the easiest place to start. If you already have a few chains, going shorter or longer can give you more options for stacking and styling.

And when you’re investing in solid gold, the goal is to buy something you’ll actually want to wear. The right length can be the difference between a chain that sits in your jewelry box and one that becomes part of your everyday uniform.
